Heng BKT Delights

I love Bak Kut Teh.

I love Bak Kut Teh.

I love Bak Kut Teh.

And I reckon I'm now making up for loss time of picking up a liking for pork at a rather late age...

I like mine very herbal generally. However, Heng BKT Delights worked well with me even though its not the strong herbal style. Its a gentle balance of herbs and meat. And one thing I noted after my meals there (as of today, I think I've been there at least 10 times since they started the dinner operations on 2nd December 2010).

I love my BKT more so in the nights when its cooler and a pot of warm soup does wonders to the stomach and mood generally. And after work, there's no rush whatsoever...just chill and enjoy the meal and tea. And I must say the company that Anderson and Uncle Billy provide. These 2 folks behind Heng BKT Delights are simply an awesome concoction themselves:P

The Bak Kut Teh as I mentioned earlier is a good balance of herbs and meat and its really soothing. Let them know your fave parts and they'll serve it to you. I've always been a ribs persons so its ribs most of the time. Although some days I have to take other options if I arrive a wee later (e.g. after my kickboxing and yumcha sessions).
Another favourite is the pork trotters in vinegar i.e. chi kiok chou. This is one place that serves it sour enough and spicy enough. Spicy is not derived from the dried chilli like most places. No expense is spared. Its gingery spicy.

Rice wine chicken or wong chao kai is a hot selling item here. When I first tasted it, I just knew so why! The ginger and wine was cooked just nice with the kampung chicken and kei chi (wolfberry). And the wine used is specially ordered from a lady who makes them specially for confinement lady. So you can just guess just how potent the flavour is. I love it to bits. A bit heaty for me if I have it back to back every 2 days...but I just love it.

With the same wine, they also have another popular confinement must have food i.e. rice wine cooked with pig kidney "wong chau chi yu". I took to this quite well as it didn't have the stinky pee smell that some places have. The secret is to wash it well and wash it patiently. This has a slightly sweet taste to it.

And if you're on confinement and stay near to Heng BKT Delights, you can even order the wong chao kai and wong chau chi yu from them!

I also love the "choi kiok" here. This is a dish that must be cooked over night for the flavours to developed. Here the choi kiok is spicy. Its very much similar to the ones that I remember that my granny cooked whenever I returned to Penang. This is another dish will result in me carbo loading big time whenever I visit Heng BKT Delights.
Started liking the texture and taste of the pig's intestine and stomach of late. However, I don't like it if it smells funny (not washed properly) or is overcooked that it becomes like eating rubber. On one of my recent visits here, we tasted the black pepper soup with the intestine and stomach. Verdict? shiokalingam. It was so good that I forgot to take any pictures. Hence here it is...borrowed from pal Andrew. Check ut his blog http://runningandrew.blogspot.com for food ideas! I wish that hubby takes this dish too, otherwise it can be a little too much for me to eat alone. Well, I can finish up the whole serving but it does not leave me with much room for the other dishes.

Many places serve dry BKT with dried chilly so its a wee spicy / hot. Here the dry version is actually loh chee kiok - braised knuckle. Looks fatty but ain't fatty when the parts served are actually the tendon and ligament. Taste it then you knowlah.

This is a must write. The rice is superlicious yummy. Here on yam rice with a generous portion of yam and decent size dried shrimps are served almost daily unless they can't get good yam. And when there are good ripe pumpkins available at the market, they served pumpkin rice too. And long bean rice on some special days. So you could just drop in and see what is the special of the day or call before you come to enquire if your preferred rice is available.

I love "tao pok". And here the "tao pok" has a unique taste and flavour to it. I am told this is because the process includes a wash in salt water. Nope it is not salty. Its just a unique taste which make you want to eat more. I normally have 2 bowls on my own:D

While waiting for your food, here's a bowl of piping hot bowl of soup to soak your "yao cha kwai":D

Almost breathless Friday 5th November 2010

I pretty much liked my 5th of November 2010...

Started off with my glass of super tangy grapefruit juice before heading off to McD to meet up with the boys for our Deepavali touge session. This round we had a mix of the Spyders, a Lotus and a S15.

The usual wait happens(lah). Nothing to grumble much since we can always snap pics and more pics during the wait. Or grab a drink (in my case a packet of Dutch Lady full cream milk). Or post for Edison before allowing him to take the pics of all the cars.
And you never know whom or what you might just snap a pic of.

Or what your subject may be caught doing:P I like to think that Brandon was caught finishing a かわいい sign but he claims that it is 2. Hmmm...
Snippets of our drive:
Had ice cream for breakfast round 2. Yummy good old fashion style ice cream in Kow Po, Bentong.
And yes, I had the fun of being Brandon's happy passenger. Its amazing being in the Lotus. She is definitely nimble and takes the corners rather differently from us. Despite the Ohlins in my Spyder, she still rolled a bit in the corners as I noted when we were behind Vic and Dennis. But here in the Lotus its all nice and tight. Conclusion? I loved the experience.
Would have been able to experience the Lotus without another Spyder in front on the Raub - Fraser route until the alternator acted up on my Spyder. Aiks aiks aiks...Gotta thank Brandon for being the support vehicle till we got back to KL.

I wonder if Brandon would be kind enough to let me ride with him again?

And this is what I missed out in the yummy lunch that the rest had while I made my way back to KL with my new battery. At least the lovely bakchangs came back to KL for my stomach. So life wasn't such a bitch after all.
Got home. Washed up. Slept only to be woken up by a loud noise of what I thought sounded like something falling. Ran to the source of the noises. Damnnnnnnnnnn my kitchen floor cracked up. Nope there wasn't any tremours whatever. Neighbours confirmed it. It was just plain bad workmanship on developer's side. Sigh. Chatted my immediate neighbour who is an architect and he confirmed it was just plain bad workmanship.
So next, I'll need to look for a contractor and go tile shopping to replace the tiles. Defect period is over since my place is 7 years old and the tiles are definitely no more in production. For now, I'll have to live with the weird looking kitchen flooring till we get sorted out next week.

Enough of being upset and emoing over my kitchen. Good pal Victor agreed to nom nom Pao Xiang BKT. One of my happy food!
And of course Guinness at Finnegans just made the day nice and sweet again.
Ah...The following pictures were taken by Brandon. Check out his facebook page for more awesome pictures.

Artery Clogging Makan Outing

Eric organised this makan session in Klang. Good work bro:D And it took us from a breakfast of BKT, lunch of seafood and tea time of fried chicken. And that is all in the company of food loving fun tweeple (all of us are tweeples).
BKT is at the famous under the bridge shop named Kedai Makanan Seng Huat. I've heard about this shop and its thick herbal soup. It certainly did smell good. But having tasted it, we've tasted better ones elsewhere. It was quite a turn off that the intestines were bitter and the meat a wee rough. The rice was yummy though with a generous of fried shallots thrown in when it was cooked.

Done with BKT, we drove off to the jetty to take a boat / ferry to Pulau Ketam. And these were some of the random pics that I caught during our drive.

The fee is RM7 for adults and RM4 for kids. And if you opt for speedboat, the ongoing rate should be approximately RM150 for a load of 12 persons. Lesson learnt is to bring an umbrella along. It was freaking hot and I reckon the group was sweating lard during the almost 20 minutes wait.

The 30 minutes ride took us to Pulau Ketam which is a fishing village island. The place is much cleaner than my last visit last year but I reckon it still could be better. So while waiting for lunch we walked around the island a little. You could opt to rent a bicycle if you like. But I can't cycle (no sense of balance) so walked like the rest of our group. And in that hot weather, I was not surprised that I actually ate 2 fruit sherbet (the passion fruit is super refreshing) and 1 fried ice cream. Fried ice cream is quite interesting since the last I ate was in Cameron Highlands some 19 years ago!
Throughout the lil walk, you'll see ice cream for sale. Many stalls are also selling fried ohchien and fried lala. So which stall taste the best? We didn't know, so we randomly grabbed one (every stall had its oqn queue). Verdict? OKlah. We'll need to try the other stalls to figure out. Another 3 more stalls to try!

You'll also be seeing the locals sell dried shrimps, salted fish etc. And of course junk food too. Take your time to shop.
Jo and I bought this buoys at RM2.50 each for our year end holiday with our furkids and our Spyders in Cherating:D

Done with the walking, our hungry stomachs calls for food. Lunch at Kuai Lok Hian was RM160 for the following dishes that serves 10 and we had 12 persons with us then. Its a set lunch thingy that they have. The lala and the hot plate prawn were my faves there.

Our last point was for fried chicken at Yao Yao Ping in Pandamaran. Eric self poisoned himself and returned the next day for more! This fried chicken reminds me of what my granny used to make. Taste better than KFC anytime. Its crispy and the flesh is still juicy. And this place also boast of their own ice blended (think they just freeze everything and then use a blender to crush the frozen mix:D - will have to try this at home). The longan is sweet and easy on the palate after the pieces of chicken.

*Burp*
And the faces were part of this eating outing (and the priceless expressions):

This trip has a moment that money can't buy. On our return ferry trip to Klang, the maritime coppers stopped us and boarded our ferry. Those of us sitting at the deck were asked to return to our seats:-( And we were all subjected to our NRICs being checked. One office had a look at mine and said OK. His "silly colleague took out a pen scanner and started verifying whether our were fakes or otherwise. I don't mind that. But I got a tad irritated when he asked how come I look different now from my NRIC. Excuse me?I didn't know that I have to update my NRIC when I decide to chuck my short hair for long manes. Neither did I know that I must also update my document when I choose to be bespectacled. Such waste of time and manpower. And definitely prolonging our ferry journey that was to take us to our yummy fried chicken:D
* Patrick: thanx for the pic of the maritime officer jotting down notes:D
