Flavours of Shanghai @ Zuan Yuan Chinese Restaurant

A confession. The only Shanghai food that I know is Xiao Long Bao 小笼包.

However after last night's dinner invitation to Zuan Yuan Chinese Restaurant in One World Hotel, I gladly say I know a few more dishes. Pork free again (similar to the pork free dumplings that I had last month) I now have another reason to return to Zuan Yuan with my Muslim pals who love chinese food.

Three Shanghai Style Appetiser was the first to tease our taste buds. A prawn, beancurd and mushroom. 3 different flavours and textures.
I must admit that the mushroom did look a wee slimy but it was really not slimy nor was it oily. It was yummy!

I loved the prawns too. It tasted right with a blend of saltiness and sweet in every prawn.
The dried beancurd dish with mushrooms was the least favourite of the 3 dishes in the Three Shanghai Style Appetiser. Nothing against the dish but it was a tad sweet for my tastebuds. However, I understand that Shanghainese food is generally sweet and finding this dish a tad too sweet for my liking is merely my personal preference as many of the other guests were happily eating it.
Braised Fish Head Soup with Preserved Vegetable in Claypot! Sounded good. And it tasted awesome. This I think was my favourite dish of the night. Had 3 helpings of the soup and dug into the fish. I even ate the fish eye and it confirmed the freshness of the fish. Delightfully light and bursting with the flavours of fish head, this soup is a must have!
Sautéed Shrimp with Egg White is a cold dish. Crisp and not fishy despite it being a cold dish, this is another must have for lazy prawn eater who hate to peel off the shells:P
When I saw the next dish in orange arrive, I smiled. The colour was cheerful but the biggest reason for my smile was that this dish had pine nuts on it. I love pine nuts for its rich flavour. Deep-Fried Mandarin Fish with Sweet and Sour Sauce is not too thickly battered. It is quite appetising and I was tempted to request for some rice. This dish would have been the perfect dish to get kids started on fish if not for the bones. The mandarin fish has some Y shaped bones but its worth braving those bones as adults as this is a very sweet juicy fish.
Sautéed Shredded Beef with Honey Bean is a dish that many others liked. I only enjoyed the honey beans which were nice and crisp. A refreshing flavour and texture to slightly peppered and gingered beef dish. The Sautéed Shredded Beef with Honey Bean is fine with me except that the beef was a wee too tender for my liking. I've also like beef with a little texture and bite in it.
Mushrooms should be big, juicy and not bitter. last night, the Sautéed Mushroom with Chicken and Shrimp was definitely another of my fave. Every mouth of the mushroom was bursting with the sweet earthly flavours of the mushroom. The stuffing of prawn and chicken went really well with the mushroom too. A very healthy dish!
Fried Noodles with Beef and Vegetable is a good end per se. Although I'll have it admit I did not eat much of it because I was quite full after the earlier dishes.
Dessert was unique. I've drank Osmanthus tea before and I love the taste. Sweet Scented Osmanthus Rice Cake sounds delightful. When it arrived, I couldn't quite make up what it reminded me of. But I ahd fun playing with it because the piece decided to stick itself onto the plate. A little sweet for my liking, you'll need a very sensitive tastebud to taste the Osmanthus. I'll have to say that hubby loved the Sweet Scented Osmanthus Rice Cake that he ate 4 pieces.
Overall experience of this pork free Flavours of Shanghai has been fun. It was authentic - no doubts about it as the 4 chefs were flown in from Shanghai Eton Hotel for this 10 day promotion beginning Thursday 23 June until Saturday 2nd July 2011. The Shanghainese set menus are priced from RM380++ per table of 4 as well as ala carte menu are available for lunch and dinner.

Give me a forever home please!

This cat has been dumped at my office building. A very good natured female cat. I've not seen her before so I can only assume that she's freshly dumped today:-(

She has a very good coat of fur. Clean ears. No mites or ticks. Very manja.

Would appreciate if anyone could give her a forever home ASAP.
And a note for the animal dumpers:
Do not be surprised that one fine day, you will be dumped to roam the streets or even in an old folks home by your kids or loved ones. Do onto others what you want others to do onto you.

An Indonesian rock band formed in Jakarta on 17 March 2001. The band's name is the Indonesian word for "king". The band's debut album ‘Lepas Masa Lalu’ in 2001 was not very popular, while their next album ‘Manusia Biasa’ ("Ordinary Man"), released in 2003, sold only 60,000 copies. Released in 2004, Their third album ‘Langkah Baru’ ("New Step"), however was a huge success. The album sold over 1.2million copies worldwide, going platinum in Indonesia.
Since then, Radja has achieved great success in the rock scene, performing at top concerts and building a large fan base around the region.

Hujan
Hujan has come a long way since they began as an independent band performing at underground gigs around Malaysia in 2005. In 2008, Hujan burst into the mainstream music industry with their popular singles, "Pagi Yang Gelap" and "Bila Aku Sudah Tiada", which won them two AIM Awards for Best Rock Song and Best Rock Album.

They have a following of 100,000 die-hard supporters who are affectionately called Raingers who follows them on MySpace and Youtube. Hujan has also toured the United Kingdom thanks to the demands by Malaysian students who were studying there. For the record, Hujan is the only band in Malaysia to have released 8 popular singles in a year! More than 100, 000 fans followed them over at MySpace, while their recorded performances uploaded on YouTube have received more than 2 million viewers…and counting.

Azan & the Typewriter
Azlan & The Typewriter (ATT) is a modern rock soloist led by Azlan, the former lead vocalist of rock group Meet Uncle Hussain. The name Azlan & The Typewriter is derived from a combination of human touch with basic traditional tools of self expression, with The Typewriter being a metaphor for his soul, his mind and his words.

Modern alternative indie rock is the genre. Utilising a range of unique musical arrangements and a leftfield approach to Malay rock music, Azlan brings a more personal touch to his colourful melodies. Expressing the broad perspectives of Azlan’s journey of life in the search of oneself, his deep poetic lyrics fuse this project together with his sincerest feelings about existence.

A happy start to my weekend with Clinique & Spoon

It was a good start to one of my weekends. After a whole week of work and running around, it was nice to finish work an hour earlier on Friday for some makeover at Clinique while having some yummy smoothie from Spoon.
Arrived in my very dark outfit at a very cheery and bright Clinique booth at Mid Valley. Greeted by equally cheery crew manning the Clinique booth and the Spoon counter. Such contrast between them and I:P
Lost for choice of which Spoon smoothie to choose. Opted for something tangy as I am not much of a sweet tooth. Goodness Grapecious. Sounded interesting. Came out really pretty looking. Tasted awesome.
Happily sitting on my high chair with my Spoon smoothie, I tie up my hair to make it easier for Sarah my artist to give me a makeover. This is me sans makeup (my morning makeup just went dunno where after a day of meetings and sweating from KL's horrible heat).
Sarah went through with me my likes and dislikes. I am not much of a makeup person generally. But I do love trying out new makeup stuff for the one of those days that I feel like dressing up and dolling myself. So Sarah went a little more on my eyes. So we basically looked at me with eyeliner, eye shadow and my eyebrows drawn. 15 minutes down the lane, here's me and my artist Sarah. I loved the look. I enjoyed my Spoon smoothie. It was just perfect.
So folks check them out:
Mid Valley Lot G(E) 011-A External Ground Floor (between Delicious and Chili’s),
Business Hours: Mon – Wed: 10:00 am - 10:00 pm, Thurs – Sun: 10:00 am - 12:00 am

And I've discovered 2 new products from Clinique that I adore now that I am quite tanned looking:
Up-lighting Liquid Illuminator (because I have quite tanned of late)
Vitamin C Lip Smoothie Antioxidant Lip Colour (that goes a little beyond my usual lip balm)

Sunday Breakfast @ Carmel's Kitchen

Cucumber egg salad, french fries and pizza for breakfast. Yeah, this is breakfast for today. It was supposed to be lunch but I woke up seriously hungry at 7am after a late night lok-lok with Mike and the Super GT folks.

Cucumber Egg Salad:

Cucumber egg salad is about the easiest meal or snack one can make anytime of the day. Light and quite filling, its just perfect for the hot days that we're having now.

• 1 Japanese Cucumber

• 2 hard boiled eggs

• 1 tablespoon mayonnaise

• 2 tablespoon apple cider

• 1 tablespoon sunflower seeds (optional)

Slice the cucumber and mixed with cubed eggs. Mix it well with the mayonnaise and apple cider. Add cucumber, eggs, sunflower seeds into mayonnaise apple cider mixture. Chill before serving.

French Fries:

This urge came around after I read Suanie's post. Its such a comfort food with mayonnaise, tomato ketchup and mustard:D Check out Suanie's post for the fried version. I hate cleaning up, so here's the baked version.

• 1 Russet Potato

• Olive Oil

• Coarse sea salt

• Freshly ground Black Pepper

• Italian Herbs (your choice herbs)

Scrub potato skin well if you want to eat the skin too. I love the earthly taste of potato skin. Cut potato into 1 to 1.5cm width sticks. Drizzle olive oil and mix well with the salt, black pepper and herbs. Baked in a preheated oven at 180C for 20-30 minutes. Stir the fries every 10 minutes so that all sides are cooked and crisp.

## Some opt to boil the potatoes first for about 3 minutes with some salt to remove the starch. It also ensures that the potato is well cooked.

Pizza:

This is what I call lazy simple meal that I can make anytime with just any ingredients so long as I have a pizza base ready. You may buy ready made pizza base available at good supermarkets or opt to make your own. They keep quite well in the freezer.

• 1 pizza base

• 50g grated cheese (today I opted for cheddar)

• 100g bacon

• Tomato base (or pasta sauce)

• 9" pizza base

Spread a thin layer of garlic butter on the pizza base for more ooopmh. Then spread the tomato base evenly on the pizza base. Layer next with the bacon followed by the cheese. Pop into oven for 10 minutes at 180C or until cheese melts and pizza base browns. For a crispier pizza, bake it on a rack instead of a tray.
