Yummy Back Lane ~~> Gerai Makan Japanese BBQ

I love my neighbourhood Taman Desa for its yummy food. And when Gerai Makan Japanese BBQ opened, it was yet another reason why I will continue staying in Taman Desa.



Hidden in the back lanes of the shoplots its a nice airy wide space. Perfect for Yakiniku 焼き肉 (grilled meat) time! And be prepared that you will hear quite a bit of Japanese mutterings from the clients who are largely Japanese.



Choose from a wide range of pork and beef including spare parts such as tongue, liver, stomach, intestine and more...But I've always just stayed off the spare parts (unless we have friends with us) since hubby isn't into it:P Over the many sessions we have had there our faves were the pork belly, pork shoulder and inside leg. The beef is also a must have. And needless to say order a plate of vegetables to BBQ too. BBQ onions and carrots are very yummy and sweet.

You can either opt to BBQ the food yourself or the friendly and attentive staff will gladly do it for you. In my case, hubby is always playing chef at BBQ unless car pals like Brandon or Lawrence were around coz then his focus is car talk rather than cooking.

2 must try here are the Japanese Risotto. It also acts well as a filler if you crave carbohydrates. It arrives boiling hot. Quickly mix the egg mixture with the fluffy rice well. I like this Risotto before I have my BBQ. Its really appetising!

Another must have is Genghis Khan. A dish of its own with vegetables and lamb, you can eat this on its own or order a bowl of rice with it. This is also a good dish to have while waiting for your BBQ to cook especially when you have a big group of friends around.

And when you're done eating and would like to chill, enjoy the free flow of green tea and chat on over some edamame. Alternatively have some beer, Guinness or even sake!

I have to admit that the whole experience of eating here is really fun. Love the grill and the whole works. Its quite a nice sight to see them preparing the fire for the BBW session.

PS: Shalom loves this place simply because we order a plate or more of pork for her that we BBQ. No beef as the beef are marinated.

PS2: This place is owned by the same folks of brilliant Sanuki Udon! If you want good udon...its got to be Sanuki Udon also in Taman Desa.

Samsung GALAXY Tab 10.1 is in town!

The much awaited Samsung GALAXY Tab 10.1 has finally hit the Malaysian streets.

Celcom Axiata Berhad partnered with Samsung Malaysia Electronics to launch the Samsung GALAXY Tab 10.1 this morning. In conjunction with the launch of the tablet, there are 3 attractive promotions for the public tomorrow 20th August 2011:

• The first 300 customers at The Piazza @ The Curve are entitled to buy the Samsung GALAXY Tab 10.1 at only RM999 (n/p RM1899). From that 300 customers, there will be 20 randomly selected lucky customers who will be able to buy it at only RM99 (Ringgit Malaysia Ninety Nine only)! Sales starts at 10am so you hurry over to line up NOW!

• First 50 customers at Queensbay Mall in Penang will be able to buy the Galaxy Tab 10.1 at RM999

Now I had the opportunity to play around with the Samsung GALAXY Tab 10.1 for a week. It was fun. Extra fun as hubby and I didn't have to fight over our iPad. And this came with a camera which I thought would be good since I loved taking pictures of what I eat. A larger screen of 10.1" WXGA 1280x800 was also good as I can surf in comfort versus the iPhone 3GS or even my Nokia E7.

Conclusion?

The TFT LCD screen was good. Good for surfing the net. Was superb for watching YouTube videos. Such clarity and the audio is really good too. And if you love e-books, this screen has you quite addictively reading on and on.

The 3 Mega Pixel camera is quite disheartening per se. But for the final results...OKlah. You can actually see it from the following videos that I shot during the day and night during our recent getaway with the furkids and pals to A Famosa.

Photos are not too bad too. The night ones were of course not happening...but I reckon for its convenience of all in 1...its not bad for RM1,899.

Surfing the net or blogging or running through your mails on the go is easy with screen and option of your keyboard. Of course accessories like the bluetooth keyboard will make it even easier:D

nice and small for petite people like me.

Battery life is something that I took some time to fiddle around. Do adjust the settings so that it carries you through a movie marathon. I am told I can watch a movie marathon for 9 hours. I of course have not tried that as I think it'll kill me to be glued to any screen:P

One bit I loved was being able to upload my pictures (yummy ones) on the go. Fun! Must remember I own the iPad rather than the iPad2.

My major quips?

• Transferring my pictures to my MacBook was quite a pain. I had to do picture by picture. No bulk transfer possible (Correctly me if I am wrong please). Sigh. But all is really not too bad as I could track the transfers as to which had failed. I only needed to resend the ones that were marked "The request cannot be handled correctly".

• No USB ports!

Is it worth buying?

• Good buy at RM1,499 with Celcom broadband packages only if you do not have a tablet. I have my iPad so I will just live with it:D---> BUY (only if you don't own a tablet)

• At 565grammes it is the weight of a cup of coffee or a small bottle of mineral water.---> BUY

• 10.1" WXGA TFT LCD screen is nice and clear.---> BUY

• 8.6mm thin, it fits into most handbags readily and is barely there (without casing).---> BUY

• Polaris Office allows you to edit and view Microsoft Office documents anywhere and anytime. ---> BUY

• Wifi and 3G enabled.---> BUY

• Surround sound stereo speakers is great for movies.---> BUY

• 7700mAh battery last longer than iPad2 6600mAh battery.---> BUY

So from a not too technical person here ...hurry over to the 3 places mentioned above NOW to queue for the offer of RM999 on Saturday 20th August 2011. For all you know you may well be the lucky 20 in Klang Valley to buy it for RM99 only. Good luck!

Halal Roast Duck @ Roast Kitchen TTDI

Halal roast duck? I am thinking...surely something will be missing from the taste since good roast duck does need Chinese wine to be ooopmhy. Food adventures are always fun so I happily trotted with supergirl Merryn after our movie for the halal roast duck.

Roast Kitchen is in TTDI. Really easy to find it. The same row as Maxis and Pizza Hut. You wouldn't miss it.

When we walked in, I was greeted with a happy family eating. Yes they are Muslims. OK...This is seriously halal:D

Appetiser arrived first. Yao Char Kwei or fried fritters. I love them with a good cup of hot kopi-o or even a bowl of soya bean. But Yao Char Kwei with Wasabi Sauce? Hmmmm. I didn't know what to expect. It arrived. It was love at first sight. Then love at first bite. Awesome crispy Yau Char Kwei with some black sesame and a liberal amount of not spicy up your nose Wasabi. Nevertheless it was really wasabish! Yummy. I could have a whole plate on my own!

Next came the XO Seafood Fried Rice. All I saw was the seafood rather than the rice. I wanted something spicy! The sotong and the prawn were just nicely cooked with the XO Sauce (which Roast Kitchen concocted themselves so that it remains tasting like XO sauce but Halal!).

I have to confess. I don't quite like the Kam Heong Fried Meehoon. No one's fault. I never really liked Kam Heong much.

The Golden Sand Kueh Teow was unique. If you're none halal like me, you'll know the crunchy shiokness of chee yau char (deep fried pork lard). Here at Roast Kitchen, the chef came out with a creative way of having something similar to the crunchiness of chee yau char but it totally halal. Chicken skin is deep fried then crunched and sprinkled liberally over the noodles. And to make it better, check out the juicy prawns. Yummeh!

Another house special we're told is the Fried Black Pepper Beef Udon. Hmmmm...I like this dish but I wished that the dish didn't taste so sweet and was more black pepperish! The beef was silky and tender though.

I did resort to eating the Fried Black Pepper Beef Udon with Roast Kitchen's magic chilly i.e. their own homemade recipe of Chilly Oil. Yummy...and yes you may buy this home if you like it.

So where is the roast duck? Let's save the best for last!

We had a roast platter of roast duck (of courselah), roast chicken and BBQ chicken (similar to char siew).

Roast chicken was OK. The BBQ chicken was a hit with Ethan. It was sweet and the meat tender (chicken thigh). The roast duck? It was amazing. Yes its good! In teh absence of alcohol, the chefs actually managed to play with the right stock and marinates to achieve the superb taste of roast duck as I know roast duck should be. No stinky smell. Juicy tender meat. This is a must try!

I will return for the roast duck. And now I have Roast Kitchen on my list for my halal pot luck gatherings! Yippeeeee.
